#12 Roll your own search engine with Rollyo

As an avid reader I often find myself searching various bookseller websites for a certain book, moving from one to the other to find the best price, or something that the others don't have. Therefore for the Rollyo exercise I decided to make a tool to search several Australian booksellers at once!!

Rollyo is a great time saver which I will have to explore further in the future!

#11 All about LibraryThing

Oh I could have a lot of fun with this....

For some time now I have wanted to create a spreadsheet or database containing all the books I own (and thats quite a lot :P). I have started before, but its a big undertaking and I have lost some progress due to computer crashes :(. However LibraryThing makes it quick and easy! I also like the idea that you can share and communicate with people with the same interests and loves that you have! The main point is LibraryThing might be the main "Thing" that I continue to explore after this program has ended.....

I have catalogued a few of my favourites (ok 13), a random selection of which is included below! Plus a link to the full 13....

#10 Play around with Image Generators

Today play week is living up to its name and I'm having all sorts of fun playing with image generators..... Some of the best I have found are:

The Neon Sign generator (http://www.neonmirrors.com/custom/) results above!

The chocolate bar generator (http://www.glassgiant.com/chocolate_bar/)

YUMMY!!

And the Chinese Name generator (http://www.chinesetools.eu/names/)

<---- Tanya in Chinese!!

Also according to the Homespun Analogy Generator (http://www.generatorland.com/generators/homespun_analogy_gl.php)

"I was as happy as a deaf penguin with whooping cough."

Err... right,.... just what I was going to say

#8 Make life "really simple" with RSS & a newsreader

Whew it really is tricky to find time to do this between all this hectic work at the moment!

However....... The idea of RSS feeds is certainly an intriguing one. For those people who have no time to spend hours scouring the internet for interesting news it is a godsend. Before this I never realised that some of my most visited sites had a function like that! However I am now all subscribed and can utilise the feature if I wish.

On a side note I found the suggested feed "Unshelved" the library cartoon (http://www.unshelved.com/) quite amusing and have chosen that as one of the things I have subscribed too. For those who know me it will not come as a surprise that many of the feeds I have subscribed to are book related, but then again we all do work in libraries and the same can probably be said for the majority of us!

In a library I think RSS could help staff keep on top of a lot of book news, without having to take time out our busy days to research it, and that is always a positive. :D

# 7 Blog about technology

Technology technology technology....... What can I say....

I guess for me (being only 19... almost 20!) I've grown up with technology.... Although I must say I am learning lots of new things through Web Learning 2.0, some things I've never even heard of before! :O

I've always loved technology though. While I suppose its disturbing how dependant things have become on it, I still think a lot of the advances are definitely beneficial. Seeing as libraries are inevitably becoming very advanced in terms of technology I think this program is very important in teaching us new ways to embrace the change and what looks to be our future!

#6 More Flickr Fun

Hello All! Today I have been exploring Flickr mashups..... In particular I like the Flickr Colour Pickr (http://www.krazydad.com/colrpickr/).

Also I quite enjoyed the Warholizer (http://bighugelabs.com/flickr/warholizer.php) ...
<----- Heres an example using a photo I found floating around on my computer :)

I find the idea of mashups quite strange yet clever... While a lot of them can be 'pointless' I guess, I still enjoyed playing with them. :)

#5 flickr

Hi All,

Today I am delving into the big wide world that is Flickr. The amount of library related images is overwhelming!

Things I particularly enjoyed looking at were:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/lesterpubliclibrary/1801215783/in/pool-librariesandlibrarians/ (Uploaded by the Lester Public Library, which is located in Wisconsin)
and
http://www.flickr.com/photos/donaldist/1803976340/in/pool-librariesandlibrarians/ (Uploaded by Flickr member donaldist)
because, whilst these particular examples may not necessarily apply to us (particularly the Halloween one), it's nice to see that extra something special that a library does for its public.

Also these, simply for their absolute beauty:

I can't even imagine working in a place like these!
